What is “digital marketing”?

Digital marketing is a general term for all marketing that uses electronic devices and the Internet. We use digital channels such as search engines, SNS, email, and websites as a way for many businesses to connect with existing and potential customers.

Can you believe that the number of people who use the Internet every day is still increasing, even now that the Internet is so common?

The percentage of adults who use the Internet “always” has increased by 5% over the last three years. (Pew Research, English) Also, as is often said, the way people shop and buy things has really changed so much that offline marketing is no longer effective. It was.

In the past and now, marketing aims to “connect with your audience at the right place and at the right time”. Applying this to the modern world means that you have to meet online where the audience is already gathered, that is, online.

How to define digital marketing

Digital marketing is defined as leveraging a variety of digital tactics and channels for the purpose of connecting with customers online, where they spend a lot of time. There are a variety of techniques that fall into the category of digital marketing, from websites themselves to online branding assets such as digital advertising, email marketing , and online catalogs.

Digital marketing techniques and examples

Ideal digital marketing is an activity in which individual digital marketing campaigns are clearly organized to achieve the overall goal. Depending on the purpose and need of your marketing strategy, you can run large campaigns by combining free and paid channels.

For example, a content marketer creates a series of blog posts that help them get potential customers from their recent eBooks. In addition, social media marketers upload information that promotes blog posts in the form of paid posts on SNS and natural posts on their accounts. And E-mail marketers is to create an E-mail campaign to deliver more detailed information of its own to the people who have downloaded the eBook. Detailed explanation of each digital marketer will be described later.

Below is an overview of the most common methods of digital marketing and the channels involved.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

A website optimization process to improve your organic search traffic (or free traffic) by placing your website on top of search engine results pages. Channels that benefit from SEO include:

website

blog

Infographic

Content marketing

Production and promotion of content aimed at increasing brand awareness and traffic, lead generation, and customer acquisition. The following channels can be used for content marketing strategies:

Blog post

eBook and white paper

Infographic

Online catalog and lookbook

Social media marketing

Promote brands and content on SNS for the purpose of improving brand awareness, traffic and lead generation. The following channels can be used for social media marketing.

Facebook

Twitter

LinkedIn

Instagram

snapchat

Pinterest

PPC (click charge)

A way to increase traffic to your website by paying the media for the number of clicks on your online ads. Google AdWords , the most common PPC, is a service that displays your links at the top of Google search results and pays for each click. Other channels that PPC can take advantage of include:

Facebook paid advertising

Twitter Promoted Tweets

LinkedIn sponsored message

Affiliate marketing

A performance-based advertising activity where you can receive referral fees by promoting other companies' products and services on your website. Affiliate marketing channels include the following:

Hosting video ads with the YouTube Partner Program

Affiliate links to be posted on SNS

Native ad

Native ads are content-centric ads that appear on the platform to blend into regular content without sponsors. BuzzFeed's sponsored article is a good example, but many people think that SNS ads ( Facebook ads and Instagram ads) are also “native”.

Marketing automation

Software aimed at automating simple tasks in marketing. There are many repetitive tasks in the marketing department that can be automated without human intervention, as in the following example:

Email newsletter

SNS posting scheduling

Contact list update

Lead nurturing workflow

Campaign tracking and reporting

Email marketing

Email marketing is used as a means of communication with your audience. In addition to content, discounts and event promotions, it is also used as a guide to the company website. The types of email sent in an email marketing campaign include the following:

Newsletter for blog subscribers

Follow-up email to visitors who downloaded from the website

Welcome email to customer

Year-end promotion for loyalty program members

Email series for customer nurturing (introduction of useful knowledge, etc.)

Online PR

Online PR refers to activities that aim to become a topic in earned media using content-based websites such as digital publications and blogs. Apart from being deployed online, it is almost the same as traditional PR. The channels that can effectively promote PR activities include the following.

Disseminating information to reporters using SNS

Engage with online reviews about your company

Engage in comments on personal websites and blogs

Inbound marketing

Inbound marketing is an online content utilization approach that attracts customers, develops relationships and satisfies them throughout the marketing funnel. Inbound marketing strategies can use all of the digital marketing techniques described above.

The role of digital marketers

Digital marketers will promote brand recognition and lead generation through all digital channels, combining free and paid channels according to their policies . Channels used include SNS, company websites, search results display order, email, display advertising, and company blogs.

Usually, we focus on various key performance indicators (KPIs) so that we can accurately understand the performance of each company. For example, a digital marketer responsible for SEO measures the “organic traffic” of their website. This is the traffic for visitors who find your website page in search results.

Currently, digital marketing is used for a wide range of marketing operations. Some small businesses have multiple digital marketers working as a generalist. As a large company, multiple specialists are in charge of each job, and each one is responsible for only one or two types of digital channels for their own brand.

Below are some examples of these specialists.

SEO manager

Main KPI: Organic traffic

To sum up the role of the SEO manager, make sure that your company appears in the top search results. Using various approaches for search engine optimization, we will work with content creators to improve our search rankings. The same applies to content posted on SNS.

Content marketing specialist

Main KPIs: time spent on pages, total blog access, YouTube channel registrations

Content marketing specialists are digital content creators. Always check the update schedule of your company's blog and devise a content strategy that includes videos. We often collaborate with people from other departments to effectively support our new product launches and campaign launches with promotional content on their digital channels.

Social media manager

Main KPIs: number of follow-ups, impressions, shares

Social media managers are just as their name suggests, but the SNS networks they target vary by industry. The job common to all is to schedule the content (text, images, videos) posted by the company. In addition, in cooperation with content marketing specialists, we may also formulate a strategy for deciding on the SNS network to post to for each content.

(Note: “Impressions” included in the KPI here means how many times your post appears in the user ’s news feed.)

Marketing automation coordinator

Key KPIs: email open rate, campaign click-through rate, lead generation rate (conversion rate)

Helps select and manage software to understand customer behavior and understand business growth trends across the marketing team . Since the marketing operations described so far are often performed individually, it is important to organize various digital marketing activities into one campaign and to have a person in charge who can confirm the results of each campaign. .

Difference between digital marketing and inbound marketing

At first glance, the two are very similar in that they are both primarily online and aimed at creating digital content and showing it to people. So where is the difference between the two?

The term “digital marketing” does not distinguish between push and pull strategies (currently outbound and inbound) in marketing. Both are included in the digital marketing category.

The goal of “outbound” digital strategy is to get as many people as possible to view marketing messages in the online space. At this time, it is not important whether the content is of interest to the viewer or whether it is welcomed. For example, the flashy banner ad that appears at the top of many websites pushes products and campaigns and may not be welcomed.

On the other hand, the “inbound” digital strategy attracts websites by providing useful assets on the online content to target audiences. The simplest and most effective inbound digital marketing asset is a blog that allows you to create articles that take advantage of the keywords your target audience searches.

As you can see, inbound marketing is a technique that uses digital marketing assets to attract online customers, develop relationships, and satisfy them. Digital marketing, on the other hand, is a collective term for all types of online marketing, whether inbound or outbound.

Is digital marketing effective for any business?

Digital marketing is effective for any business in any industry. Regardless of the type of product, the essence of digital marketing is to establish buyer personas, identify audience needs, and create valuable online content. However, not all businesses have a similar digital marketing strategy.

B2B digital marketing

In the case of B2B business, marketing activities centered on online lead generation are common. The goal here is to increase inquiries to the sales department. Therefore, a marketing strategy that attracts the highest quality potential customers from websites and secondary digital channels and transforms them into promising leads (leads) is required.

Outside of websites, many companies will focus on business channels like LinkedIn, which are popular with target audiences online.

B2C digital marketing

Depending on the price range of the product, in the case of B2C business, the goal of digital marketing is to attract consumers to websites and make purchases without going through sales representatives. It is.

Therefore, rather than lead generation in the B2B business, we will focus on building a customer journey that completes the process from consumer access to the site to purchase. In such cases, the content that introduces the product is generally placed near the top layer of the marketing funnel. In addition, CTA (Call-To-Action) more aggressive than B2B business is required.

For B2C companies, channels like Instagram and Pinterest are often more effective tools than business-oriented platforms like LinkedIn .

What are the benefits of digital marketing?

Unlike typical offline marketing activities, digital marketing allows you to see accurate performance in real time. If you've ever advertised in a newspaper, you know how difficult it is to actually open that page and estimate the number of readers who have focused on your ad. You can't even know for sure whether the ad contributes to sales.

Digital marketing, on the other hand, can calculate the ROI of almost every component of marketing.

Below are some examples.

Website traffic

In digital marketing, you can use analytics software built into a marketing platform like HubSpot to know the exact number of website visitors in real time.

You can also check various analytics data such as the number of pages viewed by visitors, the type of device used, and the site from which the visit came.

This information can help you decide which channels to focus on based on the number of website visitors that each marketing channel creates. For example, if organic search traffic is only 10% of the total, you can decide to increase SEO and increase this percentage.

With offline marketing, it ’s hard to know how customers interact with your brand before making inquiries and purchases. Digital marketing, on the other hand, can identify behavioral trends and patterns until reaching the final stage of the customer journey. I can do it.

Content performance and lead generation

Suppose you want to print a product catalog and distribute it by mail. Although not online, this catalog is also a type of content. The problem is that I don't know how many people have opened the catalog and how many have left it in the trash.

Now, let's say you publish a catalog on a website instead of a print. In this case, you can accurately measure the number of people viewing the page where the catalog is hosted. You can also use the form to collect contact information for the person who downloaded the catalog. Not only can you know how many people responded to the content posted, but you can also get potential customers through downloads.

Attribution (attribute) analysis

An effective digital marketing strategy combined with the right tools and technologies can go from all sales records to the moment the customer first contacts the brand.

This process, called attribution analysis, allows people to look into the brand's products and identify trends in the buying process, so that improvements can be made in areas that need to be focused on in the marketing strategy and in the sales cycle. It is a useful source of information when determining what is necessary.

It is very important to clarify the correlation between marketing and sales. According to the Aberdeen Group , companies that have strengthened collaboration between marketing and sales report a 20% increase in revenue per year, while companies with weak collaboration have reported a 4% decrease. If digital technology can be used to improve the customer journey in the sales cycle, it will ultimately increase revenue.

Types of digital content to be produced

The type of content you produce depends on what your audience needs at each stage of the customer journey. Start by creating a buyer persona ( try this free template ) and identify the audience goals and challenges relevant to your business. Basically, we aim to create online content that can help achieve these goals and overcome challenges.

Next, consider the stage in the customer journey when the content is expected to be used. This is called content mapping.

Content mapping clarifies the following conditions as content targets:

The characteristics of the person to use (where buyer persona helps).

The road to the purchase of this person (life cycle stage).

There are many options for content formatting. The recommended format for each customer journey stage is as follows:

Recognition stage

Blog post: Effectively combining SEO and keyword strategies will contribute significantly to organic traffic growth.

Infographics: Infographics that can be easily shared increase the chances of being caught by new audiences by sharing content on social media. (For beginners , please use this infographic template (free) .)

Short videos: Easy to share, and posting to platforms such as YouTube will trigger new audiences.

Study stage

eBook: A more comprehensive eBook than a blog post or infographic, it is easy to get contact information registered as a price for downloading, and is effective for lead generation.

Survey Report: Important content that is also effective for lead generation. Industry-specific research reports and the latest data are often featured in media and trade magazines, and are effective at the recognition stage.

Webinars: Webinars that offer more interactive content can be more comprehensive than blog posts and short videos, making them ideal for content for the study stage.

Decision stage

Case Study (Case Study): Detailed case studies posted on the website can be an effective way to encourage new prospects to make decisions.

Testimonials: Even if your business is unsuitable for introductions, it is effective to post a simple “customer testimonial”. For the B2C brand, there are even more diverse formats. For example, in the case of apparel, it is possible to invite customers to purchase coordinated photos using their own brand hashtags and introduce them on the site.

How long does it take to produce results?

Because digital marketing makes it easier to evaluate ROI, people tend to think that results will be achieved in a shorter period of time than offline marketing. It is a town.

Build a comprehensive buyer persona to identify, attract, and focus on creating high-quality online content that can be transformed into a promising audience, and can achieve significant results within six months must.

If you ’re using paid advertising as part of your digital strategy, you ’ll find it even faster. However, for long-term, sustainable success, we recommend focusing on increasing organic (free) traffic using content, SEO, and SNS.

Does digital marketing require a large budget?

This is true for anything, but the budget you need depends on what you want to use in your digital marketing strategy.

If you already have a website and want to focus on inbound techniques such as SEO, SNS, and content creation, you don't need much budget. The main focus of inbound marketing is the production of high-quality content that audiences want to see. Except in the case of outsourcing, the only investment required is the time of the person in charge.

Initially, you can also host websites and create content using HubSpot's CMS (content management system) . If your budget is limited, you can use WordPress hosted on WP Engine using the simple theme of StudioPress .

It goes without saying that outbound marketing methods such as online advertising and buying email address lists require a reasonable budget. The size of your budget depends on how much you want the message to stand out.

Taking Google AdWords PPC as an example, you will have to compete with your peers in order to be ranked high in Google search results using keywords related to your business. Depending on the keyword's competitive rate, it can be relatively inexpensive or very expensive. This is why we encourage you to focus on organic traffic.

Positioning of mobile marketing in digital marketing strategy

Another important element in digital marketing is mobile marketing. In fact, even in the United States, where mobile popularity is not as high as in other countries, smartphone use accounts for 69% of digital media usage time, and there is research data that desktop-based digital media usage is less than half .

In other words, it is essential to optimize digital assets such as digital advertisements, web pages, and SNS images for mobile devices. If you have a mobile app that supports communication and shopping with your brand and users, it ’s counted as part of your digital marketing.

It ’s important that the online experience your company offers is as comfortable, whether it ’s from a mobile device or a desktop. Make your website mobile-friendly or responsive to make it easier to browse even on mobile devices. It may be necessary to consider shortening the input form so that content can be downloaded smoothly from mobile. For images on SNS, text may be interrupted due to the small display area on mobile devices. Always take into account how mobile users see it.

There are many ways to optimize digital marketing assets for mobile users. When promoting a digital marketing strategy , it is very important to consider the user experience on mobile devices. Keeping this point in mind will create an audience-oriented digital experience and, in turn, achieve the desired outcome.

How can I work on digital marketing in the future?

If you ’re already doing digital marketing, you ’ve probably seen a certain audience online. Still, there are still some areas where there is room for improvement.

Therefore, Hub Spot has prepared a document, “Why Digital Marketing?” That enables both beginners and experienced users to formulate effective digital marketing strategies simply by following the procedures . You can download it for free here .

public relations

For those who have little public relations experience, Bikomi Kato interviews active public relations staff and introduces tips useful for public relations.
One of the concerns of public relations is measuring effectiveness. Whether the measurement method is simply the number of releases created or the number of articles posted on the media, or the traditional advertising conversion, this is a question many people feel. Therefore, in the 4th installment of this series, we will dig deeper into measuring effects and scoring. I also asked about how to work and how to acquire skills because it is a beginner's present.

Sansan Co., Ltd., which develops a cloud business card management service that is familiar with the TV commercial “That's right, say it soon!”, Has evolved its recognition as a company that provides SaaS services from a business card management company. Mr. Ryosuke Koike, PR manager who is conducting PR activities toward such a new stage, specifically explains what the point of measurement is effective for beginners to learn. I asked.

The main findings from this interview are as follows. Each item is introduced in detail in an interview later in the article. Photo: Hiromi Nagatomo

Summary of this interview by interviewer Kato and
simprovement of basic knowledge of advice promotion Tips
How useful is a repetitive job of writing many press releases and searching for articles?
Don't neglect to master the basics of so-called repetition, such as writing repeated press releases and tabulating and analyzing published articles. If the basic part is not made, it cannot be applied. It is important to thoroughly do the basics for a certain period. It is important not to ask professional writers and PR companies to write from the beginning, but to grasp the tips and the tendency of articles by yourself. If you can't write a press release or clip an article, you can't manage it and even get people to do it. A good public relations manager has the ability to do on-site work.

If you have an interesting idea, can you do it freely?
The so-called demolition is important. First of all, follow what you have learned and do it faithfully. At the end, you will move away from teaching and find your own way. Without knowing the basics, you cannot do anything unconventional.

How should we measure the effectiveness of public relations activities? Is advertising conversion good
Even if no action is taken, it may appear on a famous TV program on the shelf or be published in a famous newspaper, and even if only the posted articles are counted, it is difficult to see the real publicity effect. Quantify each article (score) for articles that have been worked on by themselves, articles that have become inquiries, articles on the target medium, articles on media that are not related to products or services, and negative / positive analysis of the contents. Ring), it becomes an index to measure the effect of public relations. Indicators have limitations and are not all-purpose but can be used to measure approximate effects. In terms of advertising amount conversion, it is not possible to measure whether the company has been published in the medium that it wants to appear on or how it was.

Which is more effective for studying public relations, "learn with books" or "meet reporters"?
Seminars where you can meet reporters are attracting attention. It is also meaningful to meet reporters and explain products and services as a place of practice, but so-called classroom lectures are also important. When was the first press release in the world, what was the definition of public relations? What is the element that should be included in the press release, and that balance between knowledge and practice is important. Such knowledge can be obtained by studying the PR planner exam. It is good to balance both wheels. You can also take a look at the best-selling PR books in the country (according to data from major bookstores).

The experience of “repeat a lot of basic work” is important!
Kato: Can you tell us about your background?

Mr. Ryosuke Koike (hereinafter referred to as Koike): I first started working for PR when I was in my second year of graduate school. A senior high school student happened to be an employee of a foreign-affiliated PR company, Hoffman Japan, and joined as an internship to learn about the fun of PR.

Mr. Ryosuke Koike, Sansan Corporation
Kato: What kind of work did you do at Hoffman?

Koike: Hoffman was a foreign-affiliated PR company specializing in IT and technology customers, so we supported PR activities focusing on overseas clients in Japan. There were many BtoB clients such as semiconductors, solar panels, 3D CAD, etc., but PR projects of what are said to be gadgets for BtoC were brought in and handled mobile batteries. In particular, it was PR of a drone, who was still unnamed at that time, who had various experiences.

Kato: What are some of the skills you gained in Hoffman's PR work that you thought were good?

Koike: You were able to repeat the basics of public relations. When considering the growth of a PR person, it is best to improve PR skills efficiently while doing a lot of quality training, but in reality there is no such training. I think there may be a phase in which the public relations work is infused into the body by taking quantity rather than quality. Hoffman has toB and toC as projects, and there are a wide range of work from daily release creation to press conferences and media tours, and we were able to carry out such various cases with high density. If you tell beginner public relations, I think that “experience doing a lot of basic work at the beginning of your career is important”.

If you are only looking at the success stories of public relations published on SNS and media, you may be impatient if you have to learn something unusual and methods other than joseki. However, the basics and basics are necessary for such an approach. For example, even in a press release, you need to master a lot of know-how that can be used in daily work, such as learning how to write and stocking your own ideas. I don't think so.

A PR company appeared on TV to explain the drone !?
Kato: The drone's work was fun, but Mr. Koike once appeared on TV and explained the drone. surprised. In general, companies that provide drones become spokespersons, and I think that we are talking about `` Our drone is such a great place '', but a PR company comes out and drones I thought it was new to talk about the good things.

Become Atsuko Kato (Interviewer)
After working as a reporter / editor for an IT magazine and online media, worked as a PR / Marketing Manager at a BtoB IT company. Bee communication started as a private business in 2006. Incorporated as a beecom corporation since 2007. In addition to providing PR / marketing support for multiple companies, he also writes for various media and lectures for companies and organizations. PRSJ certified PR planner. Director of Japan Marketing Association, visiting lecturer at Cyber University (communication theory).
Koike: I have two backgrounds. One is that I didn't place much emphasis on what a PR company should be. The goal was to fully convey the appeal of the product to the world, so I thought I should take whatever action would contribute to it. I wanted to study drones so much that I could talk about them, and analyzed the charm that the world didn't know. I met people in the drone industry and managed the amount. I intended to have obtained a lot of information, so I thought that I should speak and came out naturally. The other reason was that the client company was a French company and there was no public relations in Japan, so it had to be physically present.

Kato: There is a perception that public relations should be behind the scenes, but not only that. To that end, you are studying including the industry so that you can talk about your products.

Koike: If you are a public relations company, you must be able to talk about your products and surrounding trends. Although it is difficult for an agency that has multiple clients at the same time, it is necessary to catch up so that you can talk about the products you are responsible for, industry trends, and information that the media does not know. Because it is an internet era where information is easy to catch immediately, I want you to collect information by reading books, meeting people in the industry and listening to recent trends, and catching them in various places is not it.
Measuring and scoring the effectiveness of public relations activities
Kato: You changed to Sansan in April 2017. Was it moved from the agency to the operating company?

Koike: I was confused at first. We must make our own PR measures, and it is important to think from a management perspective. As an unprecedented point of view, I thought about “What is PR that contributes to the business?” Despite this gap, the number of PR teams has now increased to six. I've created an organization that can give more depth to public relations, but I'm still looking for it.

A hammock in the Sansan office. Various ideas may be born in a relaxing space with lots of greenery. Left: Mr. Kato Right: Mr. Koike
Kato: How do you measure effectiveness and scoring?

Koike: We are not doing anything in the context of measuring the effectiveness of “single-shot” public relations measures. Speaking without a body or lid, I think that the effect of public relations cannot be measured simply. In the first place, PR and public relations are “targets, purposeful”. It would be PR activities to fill in the gap between the goal of what each product or company wants to do and how it wants to be felt and to implement various measures while involving the world. Therefore, first of all, we set such “desired goals” and “current situation”. I think that the gap between the target and the current situation will be clarified, and the gap will be filled by measures such as press releases and interviews, which will reach the target value.

However, it is difficult to see the effect of a single public relations measure once, and there is a PR of a venture that is easy to shake from the target. Therefore, it is important to have a bird's-eye view of how far they are progressing with what they are doing. I think that the “tool to look down on”, so-called compass, should be stocked for effect measurement, scoring or article posting. Don't be afraid only by looking at the list of articles and the results of effect measurements. Instead of thinking independently, you should always think in conjunction with PR actions.
Kato: It's easy to get into the story of a lot of articles appearing on TV, but it's not that simple.
Koike: That's right. In addition to setting goals, we will briefly introduce what we are doing in our PR group, including scoring articles.
The vertical axis shows the items you want to publicize, such as services and companies, the horizontal axis shows the month, what you want to release in what month, and how you want to close the gap with the target schedule every month Create a table and share it with the team. With this, for example, “Corporate services will not have enough news in XX month, so we need to collect information now”, so we can immediately correct the trajectory.

2) Making a plan
When I do something PR, almost every time I make an internal plan based on a template. For example, “What is the theme you want to convey in the interview, which media would be pleased, what would be the headline if it came out, what the story would be like, and how it would contribute to the goal?” It is a template to check the gap with the present. With such a plan, you will be able to understand the “dissociation / blurring” between the news gathering project or plan in front of you and the goals you have set, and it will also be easier to review the measures themselves.

3) Scoring management
In order to improve the quality through “visualization of their actions” and reflection, the extent to which they are acting, whether they are in shape, or not As a result, I put in Excel how much it meets the goal and purpose and score it.

Kato: Do you weight articles? For example, whether the article is positive, neutral or negative, or whether it appears in the medium you want to post.

Koike: But, as I have said, it is different from the viewpoint of measuring the effect of a single article. If you say that there is no misunderstanding, we do not evaluate the publication of the article uniformly by giving superiority to the media. In order to visualize and reflect on their activities to the last, a score is given to clear how well the plan was made and there are no improvements.

For example, in order to look back on whether information is being communicated to the media that should be properly communicated, “From the media point of view, is the news the best media?” To look back on the amount of information provided, Or “Is Sansan as the subject or just as a reference?” To look back on the news value of other companies. Furthermore, what is important is whether this side was able to publish articles with a strategic approach. Articles that have received inquiries from the media and have been published are considered separately from the articles that came out in the project that we brought in. Of course, both are important for article publication, but the latter is important in order to gain the strength to deliver a good quality project to the media in a timely manner. As training to improve the quality of PR.

These are put into a simple Excel formula, and the total score is automatically calculated, and the target value is set for each PR topic in the quarter. Everyone is managing how to exceed the target numerical value, like gamification.

Scoring table
Scoring table example
Don't end with a shelf! What is important is reproducibility!
Kato: I think that it is difficult for beginners and singles to make things so far, but where do you think you should start?

Koike: I think the most important thing is whether or not the posting is reproducible. In other words, whether it was earned on the shelf or whether it was strategically brought in a plan. Even in the same publication, I think the latter is more about the company's intentions, and the know-how that can be obtained when looking back is different. In order to improve reproducibility, it is better to make a plan, look back, and collect information.

Kato: Reproducibility is important.

Koike: Yes. For example, suppose you were interviewed as a company with an interesting in-house system. However, if you are satisfied and stop walking, the articles will be published in a single shot. In order to give reproducibility, the public relations of a venture company that is currently active seems to have devised things such as interviewing reporters and incorporating the essence that leads to the next in the accidental exposure. The

Make a plan after thinking about the connection with the business issues, you will be able to start your own. Try to get the media to pick you up at the intended time. I think that it will be reproducible by doing such a reflection.

Kato: So you're going to create a mechanism to take the next step in order not to end with a shelf.

Koike: That's right. Instead of being satisfied with a single shot, I think it's better to look back and communicate with the media in order to have reproducibility there.

What you want to give advice to beginners
Kato: Finally, what advice do you have for those who have just become public relations?

Koike: I'm still like a beginner, but yes, I'd like to tell you that it's more fun if you have the basics of public relations as knowledge. You should study the exam text of PR planner of PRSJ (Japan Public Relations Association).

"PR planner assistant" may be used, so buy a text and take the test for the time being. Also, read through all the PR books that are selling. These classes are a good way to go one step further from beginners. PR people grow with both experience and knowledge, but experience depends on the environment and is case by case. However, knowledge can be taken stably if you study, so first tap into your head for the time being and then do the amount. I think it is better to repeat the theory and practice.

Venture companies often have one spokesperson. Such a person is recommended to make other company's PR friends early. There are lots of publicity study sessions and several Facebook communities. You can catch up with information by following several prominent public relations officers on twitter. There are exchange events including reporters, so please try to interact. However, if you do not practice and you only have study sessions and exchange meetings, you may be overwhelmed. I think that it is necessary to have a sense of balance to develop skills while grasping what is not enough for me.

And again, it means that “there is a time when quantity is important”. Since I was doing kendo, the word “Shuhari” comes to mind, but I think it ’s okay to just get into the shape and do some swinging. "Write a press release once a day", "Register the target media in the curation app and look through the title alone when commuting", "Consider article planning once a day" But if you continue, I think it will help.

If a company is not able to do the basics, it will not be trusted in the company and will not stand up as a public relations. For example, the beginners of public relations are prejudice in such a sense that they can return as soon as they are asked "Who is the reader of this media?" I think that it is important to do.

Also, in measuring effectiveness, I'd like you to think about what you're doing publicity for, rather than being satisfied with scoring articles. I think there is a point for each company, whether it is sales increase as a business or branding. I think that you should know the limit value of the effect measurement and scoring sheet as an overview of their publicity activities.

communication ideas

Also, in reality, there are many competitors in the product ideas that have been successfully introduced in the market. The market is expanding from this early point of success, but it is necessary to fight with the commutation, commodification that begins at the same time.

In order to maintain the most important uniqueness linked to benefits, how to avoid commodification with "Communication Ideas" while upgrading "Product Ideas" and how to strengthen "Product Ideas" for follow-up products and services ... The marketer will play the role of .... Broadly speaking, understanding and empathy for "product ideas" is what creates the brand. It is not about creating a brand with "communication ideas".

Limitations of communication ideas

If you have a large capital and sales force, if you can find a large existing market, you may be able to win with only basic benefits, even if you are weak. Even if the product is close to a commodity, it is a way to create a "communication idea" that allows customers to feel uniqueness and benefits, create a large media investment, and a place to experience and buy and win. Even if it is an originality that is difficult to recognize, it is possible to cultivate a brand by promoting 360-degree communication on a large scale by suppressing the shape and design of the package, naming, TV commercials, PR, digital measures, and retail stores.

However, in reality, most companies and ventures do not have such large-scale resources, and I think that it is difficult to apply such a quantity strategy. Also, it is not easy to develop strong communication ideas. As a marketer, you will need some experience of trial and error, and it is very difficult to develop human resources for that. Even if you hire mid-career, it is a reality that there are not many people who meet your needs.

If you ask an advertising agency, the difficulty remains the same. In the first place, for products with weak product ideas, devise good communication, and if you are throwing it to an advertising agency, there is no way it will lead to sales growth.

Even in the market environment, products and services with weak uniqueness are becoming less and less usable. In the 80's, 90's, and 2000's, it was easy to get a lot of attention from the media and to talk about it on a daily basis, simply by appointing famous talents. When EC was in its early days and distribution was limited to stores, information distribution was also limited to four mass media, and the amount of information itself was small, so a slight difference (weak uniqueness) served as news to many customers Arrived.

The smartphone spreads with the launch of the iPhone in 2007 as one opportunity, the volume of information distribution will increase dramatically, the route of information acquisition will also spread, and it will not be noticed in the "idea" there and will be buried in no time It became like this.

A variety of new communication methods have been proposed focusing on the digital field, such as social marketing, influencer marketing, and buzz marketing, but without strong "product ideas", products and services will be widely disseminated in this way there is no. If you invest, the number of impressions and the number of plays will certainly increase and the information itself will seem to spread, but it will not lead to a big cognitive formation and purchasing. Even with 20 million impressions and 3 million views of the video, as far as I know, there aren't many cases that resulted in significant sales.

These techniques are not a problem. However, just appealing the comparative advantage of products that are only relative value means that the era has become insufficient as a strategy. It was a time when the idea itself of benefits with uniqueness was questioned.

Importance of early cognitive formation

I explained "product ideas" and "communication ideas" that are important in marketing, but there is one more important thing to success in marketing. It is early cognitive formation.

Even if a product idea with strong uniqueness and strong benefits can be developed, it is often the case that the imitating followers lose the position and become a niche similar brand. Mercalli is also a late-on fleas app, and "skin lab" was also a late-on as a hyaluronic acid based lotion, but it gained early cognitive formation and became category No. 1.

On the contrary, Smart News, Japan's first news app, debuted in the world with strong uniqueness and benefits and was accepted, followed by the recognition of the competition that appeared later, and stagnated as a niche brand in danger By the way.

In various categories, many of the top brands are, in fact, generic products for their "product ideas". This fact illustrates the importance of cognitive formation speed.

In many cases, you may not be able to sell because you can not make enough recognition, but you can often stop investment just because the apparent increase in sales has stopped. If you do not calmly decide whether the "product idea" itself has a problem or lack of cognition, it will mean picking up growth opportunities on your own.

As an example of making a breakthrough by making use of the speed of cognitive formation, “Time Machine Management”, which Softbank has been doing, is famous. We will quickly identify strong "product ideas" that are emerging all over the world, develop them as our own service in Japan, and create recognition of that category before the main family enters Japan.

In fact, we can see the same strategy in China. Although China, YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter have not yet entered China, but Chinese companies such as Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent have developed similar services to monopolize China and their overwhelming profitability To acquire overseas companies and make inroads into the world. This is a result of the Chinese government's policy, "Because we can not enter internet services from abroad for defense reasons", and enable "time machine management" for Chinese companies. For Chinese people, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, and Twitter, all of which you see overseas, are nothing more than services you have seen in China.

There are many similar cases other than digital ones. In the carbonated beverages market, Coca-Cola is the world's No. 1 in the world, but in the Middle East and in some Asian countries where the expansion was delayed, Pepsi Cola, which advanced early, formed recognition first, and it was long for No. 1 Has maintained its position. The overwhelming No. 1 McDonald's in the hamburger chain has similar experience in each country. In England, where the market has been delayed, a local hamburger chain called Wimpy has been overwhelmingly no. It was one. In England at the time, Wimpy is a delicious fast-food hamburger, and McDonald's was the weak second best of the product idea at the time of its expansion. McDonald's gradually took the lead with the subsequent massive investment and Wimpy's missteps, but the delay in the early hamburger chain's cognitive formation required a lot of investment and time.

In other words, in addition to strong product ideas and communication ideas, it can be said that "early recognition formation with target customers" is the three elements of success (Figure 4). Also, from the viewpoint of followers, if you have products or services that are lagging behind in their recognition, while having excellent product ideas, develop products in-house and get recognition at once, take away categories. Is possible. From the point of view of the customer, regardless of whether it is a home marketer or not, the competitor who quickly formed recognition will dominate the category as a real thing, unless there is a special entry barrier such as patent technology or government regulation.
